Hot wax and thickened Dye

I am now back where I started with hot wax and dye but STILL working on my landscape series started here. I really loved the silks and wool landscapes dyed specially for that mini-series. Now I have put the acid dyes away and whirled up a batch of print paste. Judith is coming today and we will batik with thickened dyes. She was here a few days ago with her molding paste and she had been really wanting to get back into some batiking. She took some of her worst failures and batiked over them. I wanted to keep moving forward with my fabrics for landscape.

I had three pieces of off white linen 2' X 3'

I had big plants for this piece.

None of the fabrics were pre-treated so I sprayers soda ash on both side after it was done then wrapped it in plastic to batch. It was warm and sunny out (finally) and I put them on the deck in the sun to 'cook"

This was also a piece I had high hopes for but my electric skillet was acting up and I had a heck of a time keeping the wax hot but not smoking.

This is a new (to me) vintage potato masher I bought on eBay and it is even more cool than I thought. It's all in the way the wires were attached to the side bars. I love this. It actually looks like a real basket weave.

I forgot to get a picture of the front after I soda sprayed it. This is the back.

Here is a peek at the front side.

What happened after this is long but very interesting.
Check back Monday!!

  1. Really love the marks you made with the vintage potato masher! Mind if I ask the name (or ID) of the seller on e-bay? I'm always hoping to find things like that, but don't have lots of time to browse the thrift shops.
